Joel Hjelmaas

Joel regularly works with family businesses and farms, helping owners plan for succession, preserve assets, and provide for the next generation. He also helps individuals and families navigate long-term care planning and Medicaid eligibility, exploring options to protect assets while securing needed care. Whether planning ahead or responding to an immediate care need, he helps clients understand their choices and move forward with confidence. He also represents beneficiaries in probate and trust disputes, advocating for their rights and interests.

Joel is an Army veteran who served as an Army officer in both active duty and reserve roles, with assignments in the United States and overseas, including a deployment in support of Operation Joint Endeavor. His military service informs his commitment to preparation, integrity, and service to others. He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Truman State University and his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law, graduating with distinction and serving as Managing Editor of the Iowa Law Review. He began practicing law in 1987. Today he works primarily from Pearson Bollman Law’s West Des Moines office and is licensed to practice law in Iowa.

Joel is a board member with CISEN, whose main goal is to provide education and resources to the community aimed at helping seniors thrive.
